@creelunion, from what I understand, he has some continuing back pain from surgery he had around 2007 or 2008. The surgery did help - his back pain was a lot worse before. But it has never completely gone away. And, he ended up having a problem with Percocet.
He also had a couple of other physical health issues. He has the worst sinuses in the universe.
Also, in 2003, his mother died. He and I both think now that he didn't really finish processing that and dealing with it mentally, back at the time that it happened. I think that a person never really "gets over" that kind of loss - but what happened with him was that he pushed the grief down. And then later, when he had Percocet for his back pain, he used it to mask depression and grief. (This is his theory, and it makes sense to me.)
He did go to his doctor and ask for antidepressants; but they tried maybe 4 different kinds, and none of them helped the depression without causing side effects he couldn't tolerate. He adamantly refuses to do talk therapy.
And he has gone back and forth - sometimes he'll do his PT for his back, and try to deal with his depression; then he gets discouraged and stops doing any of the things that he needs to do.
And he does the usual male thing of insisting that he doesn't need my help, and not letting me get too closely involved. (And he behaved that way before we broke up. For 3 years, I tried to help him and work with him on these problems, but he never would let me in close enough.)
