Cat decided to do wind sprints up and down the hall and knock over as many things as possible. It's his subtle way of saying he wants to go outside. Trying to go back to sleep now... We had to start locking the cats in the spare bedroom at night. They would sit outside our room and yowl. It is such a sad, lonely and pathetic sound! In the morning when we let them out, all their toys are scattered around the room and the trash can is turned over. Occasionally as I lay awake, I can hear them wrestling, slamming against the wall or banging on the door with their front paws. So far they haven't figured out how to open the food bin.

Sorry for being boringly practical (by giving actual advice instead of saying something witty), but for what it is worth...
I've started taking melatonin an hour before bed, and it has VERY MUCH helped me "get to dozey" at the right time. Even though I'm a big guy and often take a slightly higher dose than most folks (for example, 3 Advil tablets at a time), I've read that more is not better... and I'm reliably getting sleep assistance from just a 5 mg tablet.
Also: - try -- really try -- to get to bed at the same time every night - get away from your screen! something about that light (in particular) resets the brain to stay awake. - rubbing one out before bed helps a lot, too. well, helps me.
(Ooops. Sorry. TMI?)

Today I have on my side: 1) exhaustion from days in a row of bad sleep 2) fan noise 3) eye mask for complete darkness and comforting pressure on eyes 4) pillows on both sides for that swaddled-like sleep burrito feeling I love but which summer is too hot to achieve except using pillows 5) Ativan if I really can't sleep (Ambien-like drug doesn't do anything for me; Trazodone leaves me sleepy the next day if it works and sometimes does nothing anyway; and melatonin also makes me draggy the next day, and if I'm going to be draggy, may as well just not sleep, the end result is the same). Wish me luck.
Of course my dog drank an entire bowl of water at 8 pm after refusing water all day so I'm probably be up at 4 anyway, but at least I will have had some sleep first).

Not very succesful at sleeping yet (I tried for an hour! Tried mindfulness and everything!) but did have the satisfaction of waking the dog from a sound sleep, turn-about is fair play my furry nighttime nemesis.

Here is a link to an article I thought was very intriguing - relating what time of night the insomnia occurs to what the "issue" is. I think taking care of myself(up to and including leaving my SM, and quitting alcohol, in my case) is what corrected my insomnia - it didn't happen overnight (haha) but I really do not usually have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep very often anymore. Alcohol, btw, is a sleep disrupter (despite it helping some folks fall to sleep, it tends to disrupt the night of sleep later on). I hope this info helps someone: www.thelawofattraction.com/wake-time-every-night-may/

Fiery, as a data-driven guy, this is very cool info! I feel I should know this, but what app? And I presume you have to put the phone under your pillow or something for it to detect your sleep behavior?

Have you tried any guided sleep meditations? My friend told me about Insight Timer which is a free app with dozens of meditations including many on sleep and relaxation. The one I really like is called Relax Into Sleep. I almost always end up falling asleep to that meditation before it's over. insighttimer.com

Fiery, I've heard about this concept before, but never delved into the programs; I would have much sooner if I'd realized the nerd-level of analysis. ;-) I'm very curious that it works from your nightstand. I'm also interested that it tracks activity / steps per day as part of its analytics. I've heard of others that offer alarm clocks, that you set a deadline but it'll wake you up prior based on a detected sleep cycle point that's more suitable. I imagine this one is also that intelligent?
