One common factor in many of our relationships is that our spouse exhibits controlling behaviour. These behaviours are a spectrum - at one end it is irritating and destructive of the relationship at the other it takes the form of violence and can be life threatening. Admin requested that I start this thread about resources available, in an emergency, in the UK. I do not post here as any sort of expert; I am simply flagging-up what resources are available in the UK when a spouse (male or female) crosses that line and living with them is no longer an option. For those who feel they have no one to turn to there are charity-run helplines and refuges that women and men can go to (and take their children). In the UK www.refuge.org.uk operates a helpline (0808 2000 247) and a network of refuges across the country. They also offer a range of other services, including outreach and child support workers. There is also www.womensaid.org.uk they are linked to Refuge and www.womensaid.org.uk/domestic-abuse-directory/ will take you to a web page directing you to services across the country. For men, it looks like the services are less well developed but there is the Mankind Initiative, they offer a confidential helpline (01823 334244). I know nothing about services available in other countries; perhaps others who do might add to this thread or start others?

Thank you both ( dinnaken and misssunnybunny) for posting these. Note at some point I might "rearrange" this content in to distinct threads in the "Resources" board, and or merging them with other posts or threads to maximize the chance that someone in need will find the info.
