There used to be a game that I just loved - a very unusual word would be presented to the players, and there were 2 ways to win: 1 - Know the correct definition or 2 - Come up with the best bogus definition. Ah, the highlights of the life of a word nerd! Balderdash! My favorite game as a kid. My favorite book when I was 12, my green leather and gilt Roget’s Thesaurus. I could bring myself to tears as a kid trying to explain why I loved that book so much. It contained the possibility of expressing so many thoughts, feelings, ideas with precision and nuance. One just needed to think the thought and then combine the correct words in the right order.

Anyone else here a complete sucker for collective nouns? An exuberance of finches - that one makes me so happy. A murder of crows. A chaste of ILIASM shitholes? Or an abstinence of sexless marriages?

I wonder... Is this affliction accompanied by a warm fuzzy feeling when visiting classic stationery shops? The sort run by a single shopkeeper, that offers hand-marbled papers, fountain nibs, and wax seals. And inspires one to improve their handwriting, to be worthy of the medium.
Or maybe that's just me being nostalgic.
Incidentally, there's this neat little shop in Florence...

Kate’s Paperie was a fantastic shop in Soho with lovely pens and paper, blank leather books, sealing wax and embossers. Loved that store. Sadly it’s now closed. Makes my heart break a little. All the more reason to go to Florence!

The kids enjoyed it as much as I did.

I've done a couple related workshops since visiting that shop - one on marbling (using shaving cream as the base, which was interesting but not nearly so effective), and another on Coptic bookbinding. You know, just in case I have a sudden need for colorful handmade notebooks... I've gained a much stronger appreciation for art and trade skills over the years.

Now I’m going to have to research Coptic bookbinding!😅
