I took my daughter to the gun shop today and bought her graduation present. She recently got her pistol permit and in our state it is a nightmare process. She seems quite pleased with the 9 mm SW M&P Shield she picked out. And, of course, the smell of cordite and gun oil got me salivating. So, what did I choose? Perhaps a .44 magnum to go with my 20 ga. Ithaca shotgun? No. A Thompson Contender to hone my shooting skills? No. Maybe a .22 Kahr to pop those pesky woodchucks digging up my yard? No. I chose a Ruger .380 LCP. With purple grips. It's used with a laser site that has dead batteries. Why? Well, it's tiny and fits in a pocket where no one will know its there but me. Cheap - less than $250. It is a Ruger - good quality firearms. It was the gun dealer's wife's gun. She didn't like it because it kept pinching her thumb. She shoots revolvers and kept putting her thumb in the wrong place. Lastly - I like purple and I expect it will kill an assailant just as dead as a black one. Now I gotta find some batteries...

Excellent. I recently came out of my fog to realize that now that i am free of my chains i can actually experience firearms sport and training again too. Enjoy your purchase!

I probably do not have to mention this to you, but just in case you haven't fired a 44 magnum. It shoots out one hell of a plume of fire and there is generally a blow back from the discharge. Not something that was shown in the Dirty Harry movies. Short story, you want to wear some eye protection (and some for your ears) when firing a magnum weapon. I am personally thinking of starting a search for a Colt 45. Yeah, a Ruger would do the trick too for me.

Pricing will be based on the condition. Or (if you are open to other options than Colt) Accuracy X makes a sub 2" 1911 @ 50 yard

Decent guns and will probably go for a low price. Not my cup of tea. My ATI 1911 .45ACP is a crap load of fun to shoot. But not so good for concealed carry. I gave my Remington .380 to my wife so I needed another cc gun. I have owned the SW M&P's in the past and I can not praise them enough. I always wear protection whenever I am going to discharge my weapon.

While I won't be able to get a ccp here in the Peoples Republic. I looked into a few. I prefer the XD (simply for the grip safety) but that is a totally personal choice.

Congrats on the manly purchase. I've carried the Ruger 380 LCP in some very sketchy parts of the world and it always gave me a bit of comfort. It's easily concealable and a great self defense gun. I carried one in a pocket holster, even got patted down one day and they passed right over it. Word to the wise though, it has a nasty kick, and since the handgrip is so small it's hard to control the recoil. That makes it a bit inaccurate over anything more than about 10 yards. So close in fight where you need a bit of surprise is its shining point. If you take it to the range, be prepared to have a sore wrist if you shoot any more than a couple mags through it. Regardless, it's a great gun that I hope never has to come in handy for you. And yes, pink, purple, green, black, the rounds still come out the same color... misty red! Oh, and take the laser off, if able and put it on something you can actually use it on. A laser on that will only show you where you're not hitting after it kicks the shit out of you!

I just saw where the Army is releasing 10,000 M1911s as surplus - not sure of the date.

A thread after my own heart! The LCP is a fine little firearm, but for concealed carry, I use my Glock 43. I used to carry a Kimber .45 with a 3 in barrel, but it was a bit heavy for my pocket. Of course, I always have my s&w j frame on my ankle. But really, if a bad guy sees that a potential victim has any firearm, he is going to run away. People like this look for the helpless and turn and run when they encounter someone prepared.
