I need some help here with an etiquette question. We got invited to a BBQ tonight, my wife volunteered us to bring beer. Well, I don't drink alcohol, so when we got in the car to go to the BBQ, I grabbed a Diet Pepsi. My wife looks at me and says "Did you bring enough of that for everyone?" I said "Why? I don't drink alcohol and not everyone has diet sodas." She says "If you bring something to a party you have to bring enough for everyone."
Now, I can never think of just the right thing to say in these situations. I'm thinking now I have a friend that is diabetic, is he allowed to bring his own beverages? I can't have alcohol, it does not mix with my Parkinson's medication, so I have a medical reason not drinking. Not that I need one.
When it comes to this kind of etiquette I'm at a loss. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with bringing your own drink. But if this is a no-no, I need to hear it from someone other than my wife.

You all were only responsible for beer. If you bring something different it can be for yourself. I think your wife is wrong.

Your requirement was to bring beer. The fact that you grabbed a diet Pepsi was not a social breach. However, it would have been a nice touch to bring a six pack of diet Pepsi just in case someone else had reason to avoid alcohol or just had a craving for diet Pepsi.

Australian BBQ protocols are that you bring what you want to eat and drink. The hosts supply the venue, the cooking device, plates and eating irons, and a couple of salads for everyone to ignore. Then everyone gets shit-faced and couldn't give a fuck as to "who brought what". Your missus Brother lifeinwoodinville is, in my jurisdiction, incorrect. But, if she did this "bring enough for everyone" stunt in my jurisdiction, no one would give a fuck anyway.

You were responsible for bringing beer. That's it.

lifeinwoodinville, I'm with jim44444 here. You were fine; you brought what was requested. For the hell of it, I'd probably bring a 2-liter or 6-pack of what I like and take home the extras - problem solved all around.

We were going right from home to the BBQ, and I had two Diet Pepsis left in the fridge. I decided not to fight this battle and left the Diet Pepsi. I've been drinking water since I got here, which is fine, it's better for me anyway.
Thanks everyone for your answers.

This is a situation to not give a fuck about what she says.

You realize that 'sodas' are pretty bad for you -- and 'diet' sodas are apparently even worse. That's much publicised here. I won't go near anything 'diet' bubbly drink stuff for that reason. Being diabetic, sugary stuff is particularly bad for me anyway ... Previously I'd have a rum and coke from time to time, but - not in years since I found out more about that stuff.
Incidentally, I think your actions would've been perfectly acceptable. You brought for everybody what you committed to, and what else you bring is entirely in your domain.

But I agree with everyone else; I bring juice for my kid to a party, she obviously can't drink what the party plans were organized to include, so I bring her juice as a special just for her... And I bring my coffee to organized gatherings, don't touch my coffee.

NOBODY ignores my salads - believe me! "Oh wow, what dressing did you use?" "I made it" and then their eyes glaze over when I tell them how .... LOL ... it's a mite involved.
{evil grin} but the bowls are always cleaned out before I leave (or they leave, whichever).

Really, none of us should be drinking anything but water. I'm pretty sure that I'll die from complications with my Parkinson's disease long before whatever is bad for me in Diet Pepsi has a chance to kill me.

You signed up to bring beer. If you arrive at a function drinking something you grabbed on the way out with the intention enjoying it on the way and finishing upon arrival, I don't see anything wrong with this.
It's still the host's responsibility to provide non-alcoholic beverages - juices, water, sodas, etc. Or delegate that to someone else.
I won't even argue the health detriment of sodas, diet or sugared. You obviously have bigger fish to fry. And I bet after about 15 minutes, you'll have already forgotten about this and are having a good time.
