The worst is behind us now. We lost power at 10 pm. The four of us were in a small closet under the stairs for 5 hours. The noise was scary and the heat was uncomfortable. We have no power but at least there is daylight. Winds are still gusting. We have a curfew until 6 pm tonight. Hopefully power comes back soon.

We are still in Mexico, due back to Florida tomorrow night. For a terrifying while Irma was a Cat 3 headed for our city. Fortunately, it arrived as a Cat 1 and diminished to a tropical storm. Our neighbor tells us our power is out, but no damage. Worst of storm is over.

I made it through with power, cable, and Internet intact. Kind of have a bit of survivor's guilt, as so many of my neighbors have no power. Now if I can find an open restaurant!

We just got our power about an hour ago. No damage, just 4 trailer loads of debris, from all the trees.
My neighbors did well too. Less than 1% of the trees were uprooted. Our power lines are under ground, so we normally don't loose power, rumor is something happened to the underground line. Go figure?
Grandpa at 84 yrs. old had a mild panic attack. The family came back to the powerless house were I rode out the storm. Grandpa freaked/stressed without power as It got dark. my W. took him to a hurricane shelter to spend the night. They were back home again this morning. Middle of the day still no power. Grandpa wants to go be with his other daughter. The W. is heading south to be with her sister with grandpa, (no complaints here) They are gone about 1/2 hr and the power comes back on, everyone's back together.
At one of the rentals there may be some damage to one of the backyard sheds. It's made of wood. The shed behind it is made of metal, it belongs to the neighbor. Very old and rusty shed. About 2/3 of the metal shed is now wedged between my fence and the wood shed, and it's roof. There's power lines above it , they are hanging very low. Another land lord owns that property. It's going to be interesting!

We have no power but at least there is daylight. Winds are still gusting. We have a curfew until 6 pm tonight. Hopefully power comes back soon. Our power went off round 8;30 pm Sunday night. I was up at 3;30am and took a walk down the street. Windy gusts but no rain. All the damage had been done. Me and the dog hunkered down in the center bedroom on the first floor, the window was covered with the hurricane shutters. Taking 4 aspirin helps me sleep through it. This was probably the longest we've gone without power since this neighborhood was built back in 88. About 42 hrs. It reminds me how spoiled we are. How we normally only go 2 or 3 hrs. or none at all. I do remember the "ice storms" in the Carolina's as a teen. 31 degrees and raining. Icicles would form on trees, power lines, gutters, awnings, signs, black ice in the roads. Sometimes they would be 2 to 3 feet long, the weight would topple everything!. Then it would snow on top of it. Sometimes reverse. Snow first, then inches of ice on top of snow. WE would loose power for two weeks. Yea... we are spoiled. I think what was driving every one crazy was the lack of phones and computers. Imagine having to "communicate", and have fun with your family! Everyone of my teen boys "disappeared" on our powerless night to find other people to hang out with. I sat alone in my quite house, my quite bed, a very dark night where you could see stars like never before, thinking, " If I wasn't in a SM, this crisis would not go to waste!!!"

Our beaches look great! A lot of sand was blown Westward up onto the dunes where the sea grapes grow. Other than that it formed a nice gentle slope back down to the ocean. Perhaps much of the sand that had been taken back into the ocean by previous storms was washed back in by all those winds blowing from the East to the West? That happens from season to season.
In the past the Atlantic has come in and washed away 8 to 10 feet of sand leaving a really, really BIG first step! Then the count/state pays millions of dollars to have sand dredged back to shore or brought in by the truckloads. All in the name of tourism and those valuable homes on the beach.

Thanks for the beach report! It's my birthday weekend coming up, so I am going to take my son over to New Smyrna Beach. It may be the shark bite capital of the world, but it has a nice pub on the beach where you can have one of the best burgers while watching the ocean and all the girls in bikinis stroll by. Talk about your "cheeseburger in paradise!"

We are feeling the after affects from Irma. A very different kind, not one that I am used to. Today's temp. is 90, slight breeze, sunny day. Normally the leaves are not falling until late winter early spring here in Florida, as the new leaves on the Oak trees push off the old ones. Instead, the remaining leaves that are in the trees are ,and have already turned brown, and look very dead. Normally our trees stay green all year long.
Some say they have been wind whipped! (sounds kinky!) The leaves are falling like a fall day in the Carolina's! So much for raking the yard, cleaning all the debris off the roof, out of the gutters, and the pool!
Our Hibiscus bush is very large, almost two stories. The wind pushed it to the ground. The side which faces the ocean looks burnt, and the leaves are shriveled. Wind whipped by the salty air. Fortunately here in Florida, when you trim a bush that size back down to just a few feet, it grows back in a season or two. We'll see.
It's awesome to watch nature work! (no global warming comments-please)
