Mate rings me Thursday morning - "Let's go for a ride" he suggests, and I don't take much convincing.
Off we go, through 'The Twistys' heading south, over the wooden bridge where my paternal grandfather came to grief a couple of months before I was born, left into 'Kangaroo Alley' and wash off a bit of speed, across The Flatlands, then the sweepers, past the stockyards and left onto the Midland Highway.
The cruiser is just loping along, there's very little traffic and the temptation to open the taps proves irresistable and for a few k's we blast off side by side until the town limits emerge. Crawl though town, over the Broken River and then right into the Benalla Showgrounds.
We are there to watch the regional Sheep Dog Trials !!
Yep, sheep dog trials, a subject about which neither of us know much about, but figure we can go and have a few beers if this event is as boring as it first appears.
However, these sheepdog trials prove to be brilliant entertainment, the discipline of the dogs and handlers in negotiating 3 fractous sheep through the obstacles is quite amazing, and we end up watching several hours of it.
We meet "Horace", reputedly the greatest trial dog ever (according to his handler) and several other dogs. They are nearly all Kelpie/Collie crossbreeds but the whole time we were there I never heard one of them bark.
Anyway, time to leave this burg and head home. I have heard about some artwork on the disused silos at a little village 'sort of' on the way back home, so we decide to detour and have a look. Back hrough town we burble, left onto Toak Road, crack through 5 gears, cruising, off the slip road right onto a long narrow straightaway over the creek, and there we are.
...and here's a pic. (It doesn't do the painting justice. Those old silos are about 30metres high)
The artist was there beavering away on another silo, his missus was telling us about the installation and the details.
Leisurely run home from all this.
Great day.
Great therapy.
