I haven't seen my humming bird for well over a week now. I suppose that means she has begun her migration to Mexico for the winter. Time to take in the feeder, clean it up good and wait until April for her return.
Keep a look out for her northstarmom. She is 2 tone grey and very small.

The joys of living in the high northern latitudes! Here most of the migrating birds have gone and also the sun. It is starting to be darkish after 5pm and the rain makes it worse. The oddest thing is the starling population. It stays the same but the birds are different. Tbe British starlings fly south, (quitters!!) to be replaced by Russian birds escaping their winter.

I have a bird feeder. Lots of sparrows and I think chick-a-dees mostly visit the feeder. For every 5 pounds of seed I put in the bird feeder 4.5 pounds winds up on the ground. The birds just sling the seeds around.
Humming birds are rare in my area. Wild geese are common when the weather is cooler and some years they stay for a long time. A friend has a house no too far from me with a pond and he feeds the geese. It was a requirement and part of the property deed transfer from the previous land owner.

The birds just sling the seeds around. My X used to feed the birds pretty much yr. round. After she left I sort of 1/2 way kept at it. You're right the birds have to be some of the messiest eaters in natures kingdom. I stopped filling up the feeder in the spring thought fall because of the squirrels. Those furry tailed rats will consume an entire feeder in a day. |

I allow the bird feeder to go empty because the birds need to (in my opinion) be able to find food on their own. I don't want the birds to lose the ability to find food the way that would be natural with out human intervention.
When it snows, then I am more generous and not only with birds but I use my snow blower to remove snow from the yard so the deer can get to some grass. The deer also like to take naps on the grass in the snow removed areas.
According to the news, we have had mountain lions - cougars (deer are a primary mountain lion food) and a few bears like the occasional apple tree in the fall. The down side for the bear is they get tranquilized and wind up dead sometimes.
A friend works way up high in the mountains and had his truck windows open. A bear climbed in the open window and took his lunch, Slim-Jims and then the bear went to another truck and did about the same thing.
When I moved in my house a long time ago, there were no squirrels. Now they are very plentiful. One winter (18" of snow on the ground for months) I had some oil sunflower seeds out for the birds but didn't have any feathered takers. The squirrels got most of the oil sunflower seeds and that was OK with me.

Worksforme’s hummingbird has left. That is sad. The first scorpion I’ve ever seen has left my apartment in Mexico thanks to heroic post Sm lover. That is not sad.

Scorpions are scary. That would freak me out.
But I saw a hummingbird in Georgia just yesterday and thought of this post. I'm sure ours will go away soon, too. 😔

I got snookered at the apple festival last yr. One of the venders was selling "hummingbird" houses. $20, I bought one and a bracket to attach it to a tree. Hummingbird never set foot in it so I'm wondering if I have it too low. So I go online to look up mounting height for hummingbird houses. Turns out hummingbirds will not nest inside an enclosure.
