About 4 pm this afternoon it happened. My wife standing outside the window pointing a finger up at the sky. I got out of my chair and asked: what? Are you going for a helicopter ride, or is there one rabbit in the garden? Look at the sun she said. And after twisting my neck trying to get a glimpse from the living room window I went outside … and what I saw was a tiny red circle in the sky. No fear of 'don't look directly at the sun. Dark red. I went for my afternoon swim and through the windows I could see the sky … clouds with swirls of yellow, ochre, pink, brown even. And the light was yellow. So yellow we only realized when we turned the inside light on in the shower and saw the contrast. By now it's 6 pm. 2 and ¾ hours until the sun is due to set, and it's dark in the house. The light outside is an eery orange.
I read yesterday in the paper that according to the former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot, it's all lies by 'the climate cult' conspirators.
Well it just got here. It looks a bit like the apocalypse might be happening some time tonight – fortunately there's about 2000 km separating us from where it's actually happening. The entire sky (medium cloudy) has now turned a dark orange.
Who needs to watch post apocalyptic movies, when all you need to do is look out of the window? It's horrible. Terrifying, and pitiful when thinking about the people at 'ground zero'.

P.S. I surely hope the parts of Victoria where Bazza and Enna live is being spared .... We're safe at this point thanks petrushka . Closest one to us is about 70K away, and a wind change is blowing it further away rather than closer. Our main risk is flying embers. We believe we are well equipped to deal with that, so all we can do is wait - keep alert - and donate to the Bushfire relief charities. Of concern is that usually our peak fire season is February .... and it's only early January.

Baza, glad to hear you and enna are safe. The photos and news reports show such devastation. So awful for the animals and people. Heartbreaking

The devastation may well be as bad as it is portrayed or it may be that there is considerable media hype as they embellish headlines in order to sell their periodicals. If it's as bad as portrayed I wonder why the PM there isn't appealing to the world for help in the form of fire fighting equipment, such as aircraft and tankers. Bulldozers to plow and clear dry timber might go a long ways toward controlling the direction and spread of the fires. The US has just sent additional equipment. Maybe it isn't being reported by the media but I haven't heard the PM there appealing to nearby nations for help.
