Everyone- Please press pause on this. This is not the place to argue politics or air grievances. I see us as a huge family. Each of us are carrying a heavy burden. Let’s please be respectful of one another and leave the arguments elsewhere. 💕. Thank you. It's not okay to suggest that others are on "drugs." I realize that was probably vernacular, and actually I do take antidepressants but suggesting anyone here is out of touch is just not a helpful thing.

Just so you know, I met my ex when we both worked for the Washingtin post. Since then, we became journalism professors and he became an editor at The NY Times. There is not a conspiracy among top papers like The NY Times and Washington Post to lie about facts.

greatcoastal if the media wrongly reports something about you or anyone, then contact the relevant outlet for a correction. The media is not a monolith. Some outlets are more liberal or conservative than others. That's a fact. It's reality. Thank you for seeking public office and serving the greater good. It's not an easy job. Being an elected official is honorable. I personally regret that it's become so contentious to discuss "political issues." We need to relax a little bit. We need to just get more comfortable with reality in out marriages I suppose, and in the real world. Edited to add: the source you posted appears to be a for profit web site created to rebut "liberal media." media. The "about" page notes it's been cited by Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. Both were created to court conservative audiences. That's not MY take. That's what they say. And I hope that doesn't offend you that I'm saying that, but it's the truth.

Lessingham, one reason our political system seems so screwed up is because there is so much money spent and wasted on political campaigns, that now anything goes, each side with almost unlimited money can invent or dig up and bend the truth. The money is there to go on and on and on. This year over a billion dollars was spent on the presidential race. some say that breaks down to $27 worth of TV ads for each registered voter. Add on all of the direct mail costs. Political spending in presidential and congressional races projected to hit nearly $11 billion. That buys a lot of BS. I was getting up to 10 political pieces of mail almost every day and they were all for the same positions and people. Maybe the people running for office are not that different than in the past. I know the money spent to get elected is part of the problem and one reason why things look crazy. Make me dictator and no candidate can spend more on campaigning than 50% of the salary of the said position. Because running for dictator usually doesn't pay anything on paper, I suppose I can't spend any campaigning money. I suppose I will have to rely on under the table bribes to even get close to being dictator.
BTW, no guns allowed in my wish to become dictator, but I will promice a chicken in every dinner pot and throw in some potatoes and carrots. You guys have to buy your own iPhones and such things.

When I was a callow youth my universoty hall of residence took all the main daily papers. I loved reading them and noted the different slants on stories and indeed different stories. I came to the conclusion most papers sell opinions rather than truths. It is so hard to see beyond the "bubble chambers" of modern facebook and twitter. But I try and I agree probably 90% of Americans are still decent law abiding folk. But it is the 10% as always you need to watch. May your man win. And if he does not, may you find peace.

We British are lucky in that the elections normally last about 3 weeks. We vote on a Thursday and the loser is out of office Friday morning. Plus they do not spend the astronomical amounts on campaigns. Still obscene but not massively so. Asimov did a weird short story calked one man, one vote. Where on U S citizen voted by foing a questionnaire for a supercomputer who extrapolated the results from his answers to pick congress, senate and president.

I think you'd make a damn good dictator Handy 😁 If you get there, can we all meet in Montana for a huge party?

greatcoastal you are wrong about thenewsmedia. I was a working journalist for several medium market TV stations and I woulld say half of my former colleagues were very conservative. In fact of the few people I've blocked on Facebook they are all former working journalist colleagues. And none of these were Fox Affiliates. we're talking ABC and CBS. If you want to know what reality is, read the New York Times And The Washington Post. Fox News is propaganda for the right. CNN and MSNBC can be somewhat slanted to the left but are largely neutral and mainly sensationalistic. I'm trying not to be proud, but humble. Our world is hurting. Those of us who are happy are fortunate. We need to reach out to those who are not doing as well. I do my best to listen and help those who are hurting. Sometimes that includes me; sometimes that's others. No labels, just facts. CNN and MSNBC somewhat slanted? Come on. And the WA Post was one of many rags claiming the now debunked Russia collusion was truth, among many other biased pieces. Meanwhile, while FOX did used to lean far right, they have been slanting left in most areas since Suzanne Scott took over. Journalism is dead. It's never been more important for people to do their own homework. One thing I agree on is the need for unity. But until people start thinking for themselves (not singling out any party), there will be none. I have never been more grateful for the BBC.

I have never been more grateful for the BBC. BBC and The Guardian, my daily news sources apart from Radio NZ and our paper "Stuff". They certainly publish well researched news as well as opinion (the latter clearly marked as such).
People who think reading stuff on Facebook is good reportage ... oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Recently even heard someone call it 'research'. Oh well, each to their own.

I look at "The Guardian" site and occasionally look at "The Economist" magazine site, not for US news but for International events. www.theguardian.com/us

I do my best to send news clips to my conservative friends from Fox. It takes some digging. The Post or Times may have 30 articles with unpleasant things to say about a right wing figure. On a good day I can find one on Fox that backs it up. For the right wingers here, you may be more persuasive finding the same content in a "left wing" media outlet. As much as MSM is accused of hiding the truth, you may be surprised how often a lot of the same criticism of Democrats/liberals is actually not hard to find. A walk down memory lane: www.cnn.com/2015/09/03/politics/hillary-clinton-email-controversy-explained-2016/index.htmlwww.msnbc.com/msnbc/clinton-broke-federal-rules-email-server-audit-finds-msna854761www.huffpost.com/entry/edward-snowden-hillary-clinton-email-server_n_55e87a21e4b0b7a9633c278bHuffington Post played it real close to the chest, but it was out there. Huffington is more of a blog than a news source, but even THERE you can find libs turning on each other. (I like that about my side. My guys will call out bad behavior. Sometimes. Wish it were more often. Libs really lost a lot of momentum under Clinton in '92.) You have an easier go of it. My righty friends accept wall street journal and fox. and WSJ is paywalled! Now I'm hearing Fox is leaning left too? Hooboy. My life is getting damn hard.

. I was getting up to 10 political pieces of mail almost every day and they were all for the same positions and people. Really good insight, friend. You need to ask, who owns this guy. Mailings aren't cheap. Look up "League of Women Voters" guides online. They are the candidates words. Free of charge to penniless blighters looking to do a civil service job well up against Goliaths that accept bribes (contributions.) You also get the nut jobs, but you can usually spot them in their answers too. I like to advocate for public disclosure of, say, the top five donors of every interest group and their percentage. If Bob Shmob gave 90% of the funding to "Americans for America", that'd be available online so you can basically know that whatever A for A says is basically Bob, hiding behind a group name. Big money in politics would lose a lot of punch if it were made clear whose money it is. The Constitution guarantees free speech. Citizens United says paid speech is free speech, but nowhere does it say you get to say it anonymously. After all, if someone shouts "Fire!" in a crowded theater, but you don't know who...what good does that exception do?
