Woke up this morning to reports of 3 big earthquakes. a 7.4 off the East Coast of New Zealand at 2 am, then, around 7 am, another 7.4 in the Kermadec Islands and lastly a big-un: 8.1 around 8:15 am.
Tsunami warnings went out, and in my town, Whangarei, a certain amount of traffic chaos ensued. The Kermadecs are about 1000km away from us, so there was a great deal of uncertainty. Downtown was evacuated because it's at sea level. I had my car booked in for a service, and we agreed to reschedule that!
Well by about 4 pm the 'all clear' was declared.
Any earthquake above 8 is one very rare, and significant one. Glad it wasn't any closer.
The step from 7 to 8 means 10 times stronger.
If I remember the numbers right, that one was like someone blowing up 5 million tons of TNT.  |

I did a Google picture search of Whangarei, NZ. I didn't see any Tsunami but I did see several pictures of a water falls, a palm tree with a hairy trunk, Joan Emery Quarry Art, a couple of Kiwi, an aerial view of the town and more pictures of the same water falls. That's scary as hell. We vacationed in Thailand about two weeks before the tsunami hit Phuket. My husband originally wanted to go for Christmas, but my argument to that was the kids were young and I knew they would ask how Santa would find them. So Santa saved us from the tsunami. I'm glad to see you're safe.

Oh my, you had a narrow escape @rosie . As I recall over 225,000 people drowned that day.
I have seen video of the Phuket tsunami. Brrrr! {shudders}
