Since depression seems to be a frequent topic in ILIASM these days, maybe folks would be interested in sharing any books which were helpful to them in dealing with it.
My all-time favorite mental health book is Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy by David Burns. It introduces the reader to cognitive behavioral therapy and leads the reader through exercises. It got me through some very challenging times in my life. In fact I think I need to return to it and start using it again.
There is a companion book, The Feeling Good Handbook, which would be my second favorite book. He has also written a number of other books on topivs such as panic, self esteem and relationships.

I'll second @helentishappy's recommendation. The David Burns books are the most helpful self-help books I've ever read.

I haven't read that but I know CBT helps a lot of people so it's probably good. The writings of the Christian mystics like Saint John of the Cross, Meister Eckhart, Thomas Merton, Catherine Doherty etc were very good for me at a bad time in my life. One of Catherine's Madonna House houses is here in Raleigh and I got to know some of the ladies there. Very nice, big hearts. Depression is a medical illness and you can't love it away, but it sure helps.

I have trouble telling if my recent sadness is related to depression or general sadness and stress.
I also have an unsatisfying job. One where I don't accomplish a lot on a regular basis. That takes a huge toll on my psyche. If I have a productive day, my mood improves 200%
I used to sort of block out the fact I have no intimacy in my life. But now I think about it all the time. Maybe because I'm getting older and feel time is running out.
My wife has depression. And I think I've spent so many years waiting for the other shoe to drop, that I'm just depleted.
Maybe I'll check out his books to see if I can find anything helpful.
