This morning I was listening to the BBC Today programme podcast and learned that in Australian elections, “none of the above” is an option on the ballot paper. I am assuming this is because voting is mandatory there. In view of our upcoming general election on Thursday, I would bloody love that option right now.

Entirely too often in my life have I found myself voting (or having to vote for, depending on your take) for the 'lesser evil'.
I think it is inherent that the people striving for political power are not to be trusted with it. With, maybe, some very few exceptions.

The Australian system really only requires you to attend the polling station and be marked off the electoral roll and be given your ballot papers. Whether you actually vote or not no one knows - or cares. You get your ballot papers then you can wipe your arse with them if you choose.
There is no "none of the above" as an otion on the ballot papers.

I was interested whether the Beeb would issue a correction on the next podcast, and they did. In a world where misinformation is causing mischief it is important to trust your sources of news and this reassured me to some extent. Today I learned that in the U.K. very many votes are discarded as void due to the ballot paper being decorated with an image of a dick. It has certainly crossed my mind.

"We should project our thoughts ahead of us at every turn and have in mind every possible eventuality instead of only the usual course of events." -- Lucius Annaeus Seneca
This is excellent advice, and terrible advice, depending on who you are.

Today I learned that "Goofy" the Disney character was origionally called "Dippy Dog" in his 1932 1st appearance. 2 yrs later he had a somewhat younger appearance and was renamed "Goofy"

I leaned today that you can take 18 weeks unpaid parental leave before your kid is 18 at a max rate of 4 weeks per year.... 21 days notice need providing, work can delay a bit, but not much, and it is a "protected" activity so no retaliation allowed.... introduced in 1999 - who'd have known that! I didn't learn it today, but in taking note of birthdays I note just how many memberws showed up to join when this forum started, and never came back Wonder if that coincides with the rise of r/reddit... although I find it useless for properly threaded discourse (this may be my ineptitude at using it of course!!! )

I learned that the trickle charger I use for my Harley will not charge the lawnmower battery. I just bought a new mower. It started fine when I got home and drove it off the trailer and onto the back basement patio. However when I tried to start the mower late the next day the enging barely turned over. So I though I would attach the trickle charger and let it charge overnight. Next morning once again the engine would not turn over. So I hooked up my fullsize charger for about one hour . The mower fired right up and has been starting fine since.

I have been absent all week as my internet service experienced an "outage" starting on Monday. It just came back up about 8:30 0n Friday. I learned one cannot trust AT&T. At least 3 times during the outage AT&T lied to me about when it would be restored. So today I cancelled my relationship with AT&T and signed up with Spectrum. Looking forward to seeing what the difference is (other than price) between the 2 companies.
UPDATE: Sept 10 . After wrestling with AT&T for 10 days I finally gave up and went with Spectrum. One day to pick up and install their equipment. The following day a teck shows up (right on schedule) and makes some repairs to the co ax cable and i am up and running. So local Spectrum people vs At&T mega mostly off shore people who were not much help. So far it is Spectrum by a mile.
UPDATE: 3 weeks now and Spectrum is still holding up. The network was available all through the hurricane. The storm was really odd. Both the coast and the mountains took a pounding, lots of destruction and loss of life. Fortunately, the center of the state was not impacted nearly as much, although there are still plenty of people who are still without power. My church and the denomination are putting together recovery kits. The kits are mostly cleaning items and supplies like gloves, facemasks. Lots of private aircraft still taking off from the local airport shuttling food and other vital items to the mountains.

If the majority picks "None of the above" we start over with a new set of candidates. I could easily go for that option.

When Obama and McCaine were the candidates, I choose not to vote for either of them. I voted for senators and congressional candidates, as well as state and local officials, but not those 2 bums.

Yes, I seriously considered the drawing a dick option like so many others as the options were bleak. Again. But, in our parliamentary system we do not vote for a PM, unless we happen to live in the constituency of one of the party leaders, we vote for a local MP and mine is amazing.
