Lessingham Wyoming, surrounded by bears and wolves and with the respondant to a 911 being over 20 miles away? Rattle snakes might be a more common problem than bears or wolves and 20 miles is like being next door in Wyoming. Change your 20 miles to 50 miles, which might be more representative in the rural areas. Wyoming non-medical/age deaths are caused by accidents (#4) of all types, suicides (#7), and homicides (#15) are actually low. Alcohol plays a role in the accident and suicide deaths. Maybe the booze (alcohol) is more dangerous than guns. I read that many gun deaths are actually drug related. I am sort of anti-gun. I wonder how many accidental or suicide deaths there are in the US compared to how many self protection events actually happen. I know of 2 gun deaths by accidents and suicide and zero crimes stopped.

Among the more balanced arguments, much comes down to a personal philosophy on independence / self-reliance vs depending on society / infrastructure.
There are people who use solar, well water, septic systems, grow their own food, and provide for their own protection. And there are those who expect that the electricity will stay on, the tap will always have water, the grocery will always be stocked, and the police will be there when you need them.
The latter is very convenient when it works; there’s a lot you don’t have to worry yourself with, and it lets society progress faster by focusing its energy more productively. But if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that the individual can’t always depend on the system.
Specifically regarding US police, recent court cases (pre-2020) have established that the police have no duty to protect you; the riots demonstrated this vividly. Some people are OK with that; others aren’t.
