Among the more balanced arguments, much comes down to a personal philosophy on independence / self-reliance vs depending on society / infrastructure.

There are people who use solar, well water, septic systems, grow their own food, and provide for their own protection. And there are those who expect that the electricity will stay on, the tap will always have water, the grocery will always be stocked, and the police will be there when you need them.

The latter is very convenient when it works; there’s a lot you don’t have to worry yourself with, and it lets society progress faster by focusing its energy more productively. But if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that the individual can’t always depend on the system.

Specifically regarding US police, recent court cases (pre-2020) have established that the police have no duty to protect you; the riots demonstrated this vividly. Some people are OK with that; others aren’t.
